In April 1997, Larios suffered a first-round knockout loss to Israel Vázquez. The two fighters met again in May 2002, where Larios delivered a devastating right hook to Vázquez's open jaw in the 12th round. Vázquez was knocked down twice, leading to the referee stopping the fight. Despite Vázquez's protest, Larios emerged victorious. However, Pacquiao's relentless punching in the 12th round resulted in another knockdown for Larios. Though he rose to his feet, Pacquiao chose not to finish him off. The judges ultimately awarded a unanimous decision victory to Pacquiao.
