Early Life and Education

Osvaldo Desideri was born in Rome, Italy on February 16, 1939. His childhood was spent in the Borgo Pio district of Rome, just steps away from St. Peter's Basilica. During the war, his family relocated to the Marche region, where he completed his primary and secondary education, graduating with a technical diploma.

The Path to Cinema

Desideri's first foray into the world of cinema was through the modeling of shoes for the film "Cleopatra," which was being made by his uncle, a renowned footwear supplier to major film productions. From there, he embarked on a path as an assistant art director, working closely with Ferdinando Scarfiotti on Luchino Visconti's "Death in Venice" and Billy Wilder's "Avanti!"

Distinguished Collaborations

Throughout his career, Desideri collaborated with numerous acclaimed directors, including Bernardo Bertolucci, Vittorio Storaro, Michelangelo Antonioni, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Federico Fellini, Liliana Cavani, Sergio Leone, Roberto Rossellini, Franco Zeffirelli, Ettore Scola, Mario Monicelli, Giuseppe Tornatore, Carlo Vanzina, Luigi Comencini, Roberto Benigni, the Taviani brothers, Ruggero Deodato, and many others.

Academy Award Recognition

Desideri's exceptional work earned him an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his contributions to the 1987 film "The Last Emperor." This prestigious honor recognized his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to create immersive and evocative cinematic worlds.

Personal Life

Desideri married Ewa Maria Dejna, an Italian architect and production designer, in 1993. They worked together for over 30 years in the film industry. Sadly, Desideri passed away in Rome on October 18, 2023.
