Early Life and Military Career
Born on December 24, 1923, in Tbilisi, Georgia, Otar Grigoryevich Chechelashvili grew up in a working-class family. After completing high school, he joined the local aeroclub and enlisted in the Red Army on March 20, 1940. In December 1941, he graduated from the Yeisk Naval Aviation School.
World War II
Chechelashvili began fighting on the Crimean Front in February 1942 as a bomber pilot. He later transitioned to ground-attack aviation and served on the North Caucasus, 2nd, and 1st Ukrainian fronts as part of the 667th Storm Aviation Regiment, which later became the 141st Guards Storm Aviation Regiment. He rose through the ranks from pilot to squadron commander, flying an Il-2 aircraft gifted by Georgian collective farmers.
Heroism and Accomplishments
During the Battle of Kursk in 1943, Chechelashvili and his fellow pilots fought over the battlefield. Later, on the 2nd Ukrainian Front, they participated in the liberation of Kharkiv. By the war's end, the regiment had been transferred to the 1st Ukrainian Front and took part in the drive on Berlin.
In April 1945, Chechelashvili led a pair of Il-2s on a bombing mission to destroy a pontoon bridge over the River Spree in Germany. While returning to base, he detected an enemy reconnaissance aircraft, a Ju-88. Despite having only a single burst of ammunition left, Chechelashvili engaged the enemy plane in a ramming attack, damaging its tail unit. He managed to land his damaged aircraft at his base.
Post-war Life
After the war, Chechelashvili continued his service in the Air Force, retiring in 1958 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He later worked in Tbilisi, where he wrote a book titled "On Steel Wings."
Legacy and Death
Otar Grigoryevich Chechelashvili passed away on July 8, 1959, and was buried in Tbilisi. His outstanding bravery and military achievements continue to be remembered and celebrated. He remains a symbol of Georgian heroism during World War II.
