Early Life and Education
Paul Wilhelm Eduard Meyerheim was born in Berlin on December 13, 1842. He began his artistic training at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art.
Influences and Early Career
Seeking broader horizons, Meyerheim traveled to Paris where he studied under Thomas Couture. He later settled in Munich, where he developed his distinctive style influenced by the historical painting tradition.
Italian Sojourn and Return to Berlin
In 1863, Meyerheim embarked on a three-year sojourn in Italy, studying the works of the Renaissance and Baroque masters. Upon his return to Berlin in 1866, he became a prominent artist and established a studio.
Academic Appointment and Mural Masterpieces
In 1877, Meyerheim was appointed head of one of the teaching workshops at the Berlin Academy of Art. His most renowned works include the mural paintings in Marieneburg Castle, depicting scenes from Westphalian legends.
Notable Paintings
Meyerheim's masterpiece, exhibited in 1873, is "Tannhäuser and Venus," which resides in the Berlin National Gallery. Other significant works include "The Sorbonne Scholars Disputing before St. Louis" (1880) and "The Reformers Greeting the Humanists" (1881), a frieze painted on the staircase wall of the Berlin University Library.
