Early Life and Studies
Born in Austria, the renowned musicologist, music educator, and pianist received his musical training at the Conservatory of Styria, earning degrees in piano and theory. Simultaneously, he pursued philosophical studies at the University of Graz. In 1968, he completed his doctoral dissertation on the topic of "Thomas Mann and Music."
Career as a Musicologist
As a distinguished musicologist, he has meticulously compiled and edited several anthologies, including "Adorno and Music" (1979), "The Exploded Continuum: On the Historical Capacity of Music" (1996), and "Oh, Word, You Word, That I Lack! On the Interplay of Sound and Thought in Music" (1999).
Academic Leadership and Influence
From 1979 to 2007, he served as Rector of the Academy of Music and Drama in Graz, with a brief interruption between 1987 and 1991. Concurrently, he established and led the musicological symposium within the annual avant-garde music festival "Styrian Autumn" from 1970 to 2002.
The Johann Joseph Fux European Opera Competition
In 1993, he initiated and founded the Johann Joseph Fux European Opera Competition, which has become a prestigious event for young opera singers from around the world.
