Early Life & Adoption
Umi Bruni Garrel was born in Senegal in December 2008. At the age of four months, she was adopted by French actress, director, and screenwriter Valérie Bruni-Tedeschi and her then-partner, actor Louis Garrel. The couple named her Céline, but she is known in the film industry by her birth name, Umi. Bruni-Tedeschi and Garrel separated after five years together but continued to co-parent their daughter.
Film Career
Despite coming from a family deeply involved in cinema, Umi initially showed no interest in acting. She preferred to play with her peers rather than work on set. However, her mother eventually convinced her to join the cast of "Summer House," a film directed, written, and starring Bruni-Tedeschi. The film, which partially drew from Bruni-Tedeschi's own life and relationships, featured Umi as Célia, the Senegalese-born adopted daughter of the main character.
Umi made her debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2018. While she enjoyed posing for photographers on the red carpet, she was dissatisfied with the film's content, considering it inappropriate for children. Bruni-Tedeschi agreed with her daughter's assessment. However, she remained proud of her daughter's performance, though she was uncertain if Umi would continue acting.
Umi's next project was the youth comedy "This New World," directed, written, and starring her adoptive father, Louis Garrel. Umi's role in the film was largely improvised, and after this experience, she developed a love for acting and filmmaking. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021 and was released in Russia in 2022.
Activism & Personal Life
Despite her young age, Umi is an active advocate for social causes. She has participated in Black Lives Matter protests and continues to fight for the rights of Black people.
"Princess of Ballet" & Beyond
In 2021, Umi landed her first leading role in the family drama "Princess of Ballet." This marks the first film in which neither of her parents is involved. The film focuses on a young ballerina named Nina who faces challenges on her journey to success. The film was released worldwide in 2022 and in Russia in 2023.
As of 2023, Umi Bruni Garrel continues to act and pursue her passion for filmmaking and social activism.
