Ovanes Sergeyevich Ohanyan (Armenian: Օվանես Սերգուհի Օհանյան, born July 5, 1952, Yerevan) is an Armenian state official.
Education and Early Career
Ohanyan attended the Yerevan Middle School named after Shirvanzade from 1959 to 1969. He then went on to study at the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute from 1969 to 1974, specializing in architecture and construction. After completing his studies, he worked as a master, foreman, and chief engineer at the Yerevan Construction Trust No. 3 from 1974 to 1978. In 1978, he attended the Moscow Higher School of Management, and from 1985 to 1988, he studied at the Moscow Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Career in Politics
Ohanyan began his political career in 1987 when he became the chairman of the Kotayk District Council. He served in this position until 1996. During this time, he also became a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR and a member of the parliamentary group "Liberal-Democrats" from 1991 to 1995. From 1995 to 1999, he was a member of the parliament and served as a member of the standing committee on foreign relations. He was also a member of the Ramkavar-Azatakan Party.
In 1996, Ohanyan was appointed as the governor of Kotayk Province, a position he held until 1998. He then returned to the parliament as a deputy from 1999 to 2003, where he chaired the standing committee on foreign relations and led the Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Since 2004, he has been the leader of the Liberal Progressive Party.
