Owen Beck: Jamaican Heavyweight Boxer
Owen Beck, a professional boxer from Jamaica, competed in the heavyweight division.
Debut and Early Career
Beck's professional debut came in December 1998. In February 2005, he faced Monte Barrett in an eliminator fight and was knocked out in the ninth round.
Contentious Bout with Ray Austin
In September 2005, Beck fought Ray Austin for the IBF's number two ranking in the heavyweight division. Originally, Sergei Lyakhovich was supposed to face Beck, but he suffered an injury shortly before the fight. Austin was brought in as a replacement just a week before the match. In the eleventh round, Austin landed a left hook on Beck's jaw, causing him to stumble into the corner. The referee, however, did not count it as a knockdown. Austin's subsequent right hook missed, and Beck fell onto the ropes. Austin continued to attack, but Beck managed to survive until the bell rang. The judges' decision split, with the crowd expressing their dissatisfaction with Beck's victory.
Title Shot and Defeat
In June 2006, Beck challenged WBA world heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev in Germany. Valuev knocked out Beck in the third round.
