Biography of Oksana Mysina

Oksana Mysina is a renowned actress, singer, and director of the Moscow Theater. She is well-known and loved by the audience for her unforgettable performances in television series such as "Kamenskaya," where she played a mysterious woman who was poisoned in the investigator's office, and "Family Secrets," where she brilliantly portrayed a banker. She is often described as astonishing and fantastic, and for good reason. Mysina possesses an incredible ability to encompass the vast universe with millions of planets and constellations that spin at a frenetic pace or pause to be reborn and shine anew. She is an extraordinary and independent actress.

Oksana's Unique Personality

Oksana, you give the impression of a person without age, almost like a grown-up child.
Yes, indeed. I often still fly in my dreams. I guess I'm still growing... (laughs). Although, how much more can I grow? Not long ago, I had a dream where I took off from the ground and started flying, but two unpleasant men began to chase me. Suddenly, fluffy and comfortable flakes of manna started falling from the sky. They later told me, "That was heavenly manna!" I exclaimed, "Oh, how wonderful!"

Who are you in your dreams and fantasies?
I am a little girl. A long-legged girl, but of small stature. With a little nose. One of the directors told me, "You are Thumbelina in your soul, I will let you play her." I didn't grow for a long time, but then at the age of 15, I suddenly shot up. So, inside, I still feel like I'm small. Even now. Maybe it's a good thing because it gives me something to have a dialogue with myself about. Although, in my childhood, on the contrary, I had a tragic, adult perception of life. For example, at the age of 5, I left home "forever." In winter, during a blizzard, I put on a red coat with a black collar, then stood in the freezing cold with the thought that I would never return to people who didn't understand me. I didn't play with dolls at all. I had friends – boys who were in love with me. I ran around with them in the yard and the streets and felt complete. And now, I am more carefree.

Personal Growth and Passion for Reading

You were raised so strictly that you had to leave home?
Yes and no. They made me read, for example. But I resisted because my first book was about a tragedy: a little dog drowned in the end. While I was reading, someone asked a problematic question, "Well, did she finally drown?" And I suddenly hated all books. I always threw tantrums when they made me read. It was like that until I came across "Robinson Crusoe." That book is still my favorite. After reading it, I want to live and be happy.

Entrepreneurial Spirit and Theatrical Ventures

Oksana, perhaps only you could take the risk of financing and playing the male role of Pansa in the independent production of "Don Quixote and Sancho" with your own money.
We used almost all the money I earned from "Family Secrets." We bought a car and use it to transport decorations, lanterns, and costumes. My husband, John (an American theater critic, playwright, and writer), was a great help. Of course, "Oksana Mysina's Theatrical Brotherhood" is not a profitable business... By the way, I learned to drive during the shooting. I wanted to learn earlier, but I had such an attachment to all living beings that when a person or a cat appeared near the car during our previous driving lessons, I would stop and shout, "Oh my God, what will happen to them?!" Then John said, "It's not your business, forget it like a bad dream." But now I drive. And I feel good behind the wheel. I'm ready to go wherever, whether necessary or not, as long as I can drive.

Passion for Acting and Living in the Moment

But what about the Moscow traffic that annoys people to death?
Traffic has never annoyed me! There have been a few times when I had to leave the car and run to the performance, but that's normal. And if you're not in a hurry, a traffic jam can be enjoyable – you sit there, listen to your favorite jazz. And if it's raining and drumming on the windows at the same time...

But life is not just jazz, rain, and sheer enthusiasm. You also need to eat... You have performed in various theaters such as the TYUZ, Moscow Art Theatre, and the New Drama Theater, but you have only participated in one independent production – "The Kitchen" by Oleg Menshikov. You must have been approached by different directors.
For me, it's important to find the work interesting. As for the money... but everyone in Russia lives day by day, and I am not alone in this. I don't think about old age. Some actors say, "How will you live when you retire?" But I have no intention of retiring, why would I? At worst, I will die on stage. Although, maybe I think this way because John helps me a lot. He is planning to retire from being a critic now because there is no time left to work on his own – to write novels, screenplays. Recently, he co-wrote a wonderful screenplay with Yevgeny Lungin.

Friendship and Artistic Collaboration

Hopefully, it's intended for you?
Yes, for me and Yulia Rutberg.
As far as we know, you and Yulia are friends, despite being so different...
Yes. We observed each other for a long time and suddenly became friends as if we had known each other all our lives. You're right, Yulia is different. But we have a bond that feels like family. Yulia is more ironic, intelligent, sharp-tongued. I am more contemplative, silent. Although... Sometimes I get lost in figuring out who I really am. Because there are roles that strongly influence me, and I influence them. I often feel like an open conduit. After performing a play, it feels like I have visited another world, lived a different life. And then I immediately prepare for the next performance. I do aerobics and dance like crazy at home on weekends to rejuvenate and recover from emotional exhaustion. Then I feel refreshed, and my hands become light...

Love and Long-Term Partnership

If an actress belongs to the theater, she is either alone or has a series of marriages. You have been together with John for 12 years. Is this a unique case?
It might be. We simply understand each other. John takes care of the household, and he is the one who knows how to arrange the furniture. I call him the Minister of Taste. I don't have that gift. In the theater, I can feel many things. But in life, I can't. When we lived in Lyubertsy, in a tiny apartment, we were happy, and the everyday life didn't bother us. For me, a home is a place to rest, engage in activities, and recharge.

Being a Free Artist

Oksana, to be a free artist, is it good or bad?
If I were within the framework of a theater, I would inevitably be constrained by hierarchy and inexplicable diplomacy. After all, I am a perfectionist, and many in the theater perceive this as eccentricity or scandalous behavior. I demand a lot from myself, and I believe that the same should be expected from everyone in the theater. You cannot be lukewarm; you must be passionate! For example, I don't understand how actors can solve crossword puzzles in the theater or come in, to put it mildly, not in top form. I'm ashamed for them, and I explode. That's why I have become a wandering actress. I need to work with like-minded people. It's bitter, but true brotherhood cannot exist in the theater.
