Biography of Pablo Serrano

Early Life and Career

Pablo Serrano was born in 1908 in Crivillén, Teruel Province, Spain. He settled in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1935 and remained there until 1954. During his time in Montevideo, Serrano had the opportunity to meet renowned artists and sculptors such as Joaquín Torres García and Lucio Fontana, which led to his own recognition as a sculptor.

Recognition and Achievements

In 1955, Serrano won the III Biennial of Spanish American Art in Barcelona. He had his own exhibition at the Atheneum in Madrid in 1957. During this period, Serrano co-founded the creative group "El Paso Group" with Manolo Millares and Antonio Saura. He also worked on his own project titled "Drama of the Object and Burning of the Object" in 1957 and 1958.

International Exhibitions

Serrano's career reached its peak with the series of works titled "Rhythms in Space," dynamic compositions made of stainless steel. By the early 1960s, he had become firmly associated with the avant-garde of Spanish abstract sculpture. His works were exhibited at the MOMA in New York, Washington, Chicago, and New Hampshire, representing Spain.

Serrano also exhibited his compositions in Germany at the "Current Art" exhibition in Aschaffenburg. In 1961, he was invited to the Pittsburg International at the Carnegie Institute, and his works were presented at the Rodin Museum in Paris. In May of the same year, Serrano received the "González Critics Prize" from the Barcelona Salon of May.

Later Years and Legacy

At the XXXI International Biennale in Venice in 1962, Serrano placed second, with Alberto Giacometti winning first place. In 1967, his works were exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum during the "Sculpture from Twenty Nations" exhibition. Serrano received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Prince of Asturias Award for his contribution to art and the universal significance of his works.

In the mid-1980s, Serrano's works could be seen at the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad. He passed away at the age of 77 in Madrid on November 26, 1985. In 1994, the Pablo Serrano Foundation-Museum was officially opened in Saragossa, Spain to honor his legacy.
