Paola De Micheli: A Political Journey

Early Life and Career

Paola De Micheli is an Italian politician who served as Minister of Infrastructure and Transport from 2019 to 2021. She holds a degree in Political Science from the Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Milan.

De Micheli began her professional career with an agricultural and food cooperative in Piacenza. From 1999 to 2004, she served as a municipal councilor in Pontenure. From June 2007 to March 2010, she held the position of assessor for economic and financial affairs, and human resources in the Piacenza administration.

Political Affiliation

As a young woman, De Micheli joined the Christian Democratic Party, and later transitioned to the Italian People's Party, Margherita, and finally, the Democratic Party. In 2008, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for the first time.

Roles in the Democratic Party

From 2009, when Pier Luigi Bersani led the Democratic Party, De Micheli worked in the economic department of the party's secretariat, focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises. She was considered a political ally of Gianni Cuperlo and Enrico Letta, and worked with Nicola Zingaretti from September 2018.

Ministerial Appointments

In 2014, De Micheli was appointed Undersecretary for Economy and Finance under Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. She retained the position in the Gentiloni government from 2016 to 2018.

In 2019, she became Deputy National Secretary of the Democratic Party under Nicola Zingaretti. Later that year, she was appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in the second government of Giuseppe Conte.

Notable Achievements

In her role as Transport Minister, De Micheli oversaw the opening of the San Giorgio Bridge in Genoa in 2020, a replacement for the collapsed Morandi Bridge in 2018.
