Early Life and Education

Born in Mount Pleasant, Harare, Zimbabwe, Fadzayi Mahere attended Arundel School for her primary education. In 2004, she enrolled at the University of Zimbabwe, where she obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree with Honors (LLB Hons.) in 2008. Pursuing her passion for law, she went on to the University of Cambridge in 2010, where she earned an LL.M degree in International Criminal Law and International Commercial Litigation in 2011.

Following her academic pursuits, Mahere established a successful career as a lawyer. Her argument that the bonds were unconstitutional under Chapter 17 of the Constitution sparked significant debate.

Concurrently with her legal work, Mahere became an influential activist. In 2016, she joined the #thisflagmovement, mobilizing citizens through social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook Live to voice their dissent against government policies. In 2017, she announced her intention to run as an independent candidate for the Harare suburb of Mount Pleasant in the 2018 general elections.

Political Affiliations

Mahere's political journey took a significant turn in June 2019 when she formally joined the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party as a shadow education minister. Her role expanded in May 2020 when she was appointed national spokesperson for the MDC Alliance coalition.

Notable Achievements

Beyond her political and legal contributions, Mahere has achieved recognition for her academic excellence. In 2007, she was part of the Zimbabwean team that won the All-Africa Moot Court Competition on International Humanitarian Law in Arusha, Tanzania. She was also awarded the Best Oralist Prize in the final round of the competition.
