Paolo Giovio, also known as Bishop of Nocera, was an Italian scholar, physician, historian, biographer, and collector.
Notable Works
Giovio's most famous work is his chronicle of the Italian Wars, "Historiarum sui temporis." As an eyewitness to some of the battles, his account is particularly valuable. He also published firsthand accounts of Russia, based on the embassy of Dmitry Gerasimov to Pope Clement VII in 1525. Additionally, he compiled a description of the British Isles in 1548 and wrote biographies of famous men of the past in 1546.
Artistic Patronage
Giovio was an influential art patron and commissioned Raphael to paint one of his masterpieces, "The Alba Madonna." He was also an avid collector of portraits of distinguished individuals, assembling the renowned "Giovio Series" of 484 paintings.
Humanitarian Contributions
As the court physician to the popes, Giovio provided medical care to those in need. He also established a scholarship for promising young scholars from his hometown.
