Paolo Lucio Anafesto: The First Doge of Venice

Election and Rule

In the year 697, the legendary Paolo Lucio Anafesto became the first Doge (or Duke) of Venice. This election took place in the town of Eraclea (Heraclea) within the Venetian lagoon. The election occurred during a period of conflict and strife among the twelve tribunes who had previously governed the lagoon. In response to threats from the Lombards and Slavs, the patriarch of Gradus encouraged the election of a single ruler to coordinate the defense of the region.

Anafesto's rule lasted from 697 to 717. During this time, he reportedly negotiated a peace treaty with the Lombard king Liutprand. However, the legitimacy of this election is questionable as it was not sanctioned by the Byzantine emperor, who held authority over the Venetian territories.

Historical Origins

The concept of a Doge may have originated from Paulicius, an exarch of Ravenna who was responsible for the defense of the Venetian border near Eraclea. The exact historical connection between Paulicius and the first Doge is unclear, but it is believed that some of his functions and responsibilities were later transferred to the office of the Doge.
