Early Life and Musical InfluencesPat Smear (George Ruthenberg) was born on August 5, 1959, in California, USA. His mother was African-American, and his father was a German-Jewish immigrant. Smear started taking piano lessons at a young age, but later taught himself how to play the guitar. The Germs and The Adolescents
