Early Life and Career BeginningsBorn on September 20, 1890, in Dublin, Ireland, Patricia Collinge embarked on her acting journey at the young age of 14 in London's theaters. In 1907, she relocated with her mother to the United States, where her career took a comedic turn as she graced stages from 1910 onwards.
Broadway Acclaim and Critical Recognition
Collinge established herself as a skilled actress on Broadway, starring in various productions. Her performance in "Autumn Crocus" in 1932 garnered her critical acclaim from "The New York Times."
Academy Award Nomination for "The Little Foxes"
In 1939, Collinge portrayed Birdie Hubbard in Lillian Hellman's Broadway play "The Little Foxes." Two years later, she reprised her role in the film adaptation, which featured Bette Davis in the lead role. For her exceptional performance, Collinge received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Hitchcockian Thriller and Later Career
Collinge appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's classic suspense film "Shadow of a Doubt" in 1943. Throughout the following years, she continued her prolific stage career, making her final Broadway appearance in 1952. Her later film and television credits include "The Nun's Story" (1959) and guest roles in "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "NYPD."
Personal Life and Legacy
Collinge was married four times. Her first marriage to Frank McGlynn resulted in the birth of a daughter. Her subsequent marriages to Robert Colquhoun and Stephen Jerwood also produced children, with Jerwood tragically passing away in a car accident. Collinge's final husband, Elzebeth Barrett, remained with her until her death from a heart attack on April 10, 1974, at the age of 82. She left behind a legacy as a versatile and accomplished actress.
