Patrick Dempsey, an American actor, was born on January 13, 1966. He grew up in Lewiston, Maine, as the youngest of three children. From a young age, he developed an interest in juggling and magic, performing as a magician, juggler, and puppeteer in local groups. Despite struggling with dyslexia, which he has since overcome, Dempsey dropped out of college to tour New England.

Early Career

Dempsey's acting career began when he was noticed by an agent who offered him auditions for the touring production of "Torch Song Trilogy." He landed the role originally played by Matthew Broderick on Broadway, leading to his first major role in Neil Simon's touring play "Brighton Beach Memoirs." In 1985, Dempsey made his film debut in the teen comedy "Heaven Help Us." Despite being only 19 years old at the time, he portrayed teenagers in several films over the next few years.

Breakthrough Role

Dempsey's breakthrough role came in the 1987 film "Can't Buy Me Love," where he played a high school nerd who pays a popular college girl to pretend to be his girlfriend. That same year, he starred in the film "In the Mood," a true story about a 15-year-old boy who enters a relationship with a woman twice his age, who eventually marries him. Interestingly, Dempsey himself got married in 1987 at the age of 21 to 48-year-old Rocky Parker, who had a supporting role in "In the Mood." Although the marriage didn't last, Dempsey continued working in television and stage productions, often going unnoticed by the public.

Dempsey's career took off when he landed the role of the psychologically unstable brother in the television series "Once and Again." His performance earned him an Emmy Award in 2001, bringing him back into the public eye. The film was a box office success and helped solidify Dempsey's popularity.
