Patrick Monahan is an American musician, singer, and songwriter, best known as the vocalist of the popular band 'Train'. Born on February 28, 1969, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Patrick was the youngest of seven children in a family of a store owner who had a passion for music. It was his father who instilled the love for music in him and encouraged him to play the guitar and other musical instruments from an early age.
Formation of 'Train' and Success
After graduating from McDowell High School, Monahan attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. In the late 1980s, he started his music career in a cover band called 'Rogues Gallery'. After the band disbanded in 1993, he moved to San Francisco, California, where he met Rob Hotchkiss in a coffee shop. Together, they formed the band 'Train' and embarked on a journey from the creative environment of San Francisco to the business and talent-rich Los Angeles.
'Train' quickly gained success and started conquering the American rock scene. Their style, described by themselves as rock, was often classified by music critics and fans as pop rock, a genre that was flourishing in the mid-1990s and early 2000s. In 2002, the band won two Grammy Awards for their song 'Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)', which was inspired by the untimely death of Monahan's mother from cancer. The following year, they released the song 'Calling All Angels', which became the unofficial anthem of the professional baseball team 'Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim' and solidified the band's popularity among their fans.
Solo Career and Continued Success
In 2006, 'Train' went on a hiatus, allowing Monahan to focus on his solo career. In September 2007, he released his debut studio album 'Last of Seven' and embarked on a tour across the United States to promote it. However, after 'Train' announced their return in 2009, Monahan had to temporarily put his solo performances on hold to prioritize the band, which was always more important to him than his solo fame.
Today, Patrick Monahan continues to perform concerts and record new songs with 'Train', while occasionally delighting fans with his own singles.
