However, in May 2002, eight months after the attack on the World Trade Center, Tillman declined to renew his contract and enlisted in the U.S. Army. His brother, Kevin, accompanied him during the enlistment process, as he also chose military service over his sports career. In September 2002, the Tillman brothers completed basic training and were assigned to the Ranger Regiment.

Patrick Tillman participated in the initial operations of the new war in Iraq in September 2003 before being sent for additional training. On November 28, 2003, Tillman completed the additional courses and was soon deployed to Afghanistan. Tragically, Tillman lost his life on April 22, 2004. Initially, it was announced that he was killed by enemy soldiers. However, an investigation conducted later revealed shocking findings. It was discovered that Tillman was actually killed by friendly fire.

During a firefight, Tillman's unit became separated, with one group falling into an ambush and the other rushing to their aid. In the confusion, the Americans mistakenly opened fire on their own troops, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and the injury of two others, including Tillman. Further speculation arose that Tillman's death was not accidental. Some sources claimed that he was shot three times in the back of the head at close range. These sources alleged that Tillman was executed for being too vocal about the true activities of his unit, which involved guarding poppy fields and transporting opium instead of searching for Osama bin Laden.

The circumstances surrounding Tillman's death sparked significant controversy and led to a high-profile investigation. The tragic loss of Pat Tillman, a renowned football player who sacrificed his career to serve his country, remains a significant event in American history.
