Biography of Patrick Berger
Patrick Berger is a Czechoslovak and Czech footballer, playing as a midfielder. He was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. His uncle is Czech footballer Jan Berger. He is married to Jaroslava and has two children, son Patrick and daughter Valentinka. In 2001, he obtained British citizenship after playing for a football club in England for five years. This allowed him to play without needing a work permit, which was required for players who were not members of the EU.
Career
Prague and Dortmund:
Berger started his football career as a youth player for Sparta Prague in 1989, but he never played for the first team. In 1991, Patrick moved to another Prague club, Slavia, signing a professional contract for two years. He became a player for the Czechoslovakian national team and later chose to represent the Czech Republic.
On May 5, 2008, Berger publicly urged his Aston Villa teammate Gareth Barry not to miss the opportunity to move to Liverpool, which was planning to acquire him, saying that "such an opportunity only comes once in a lifetime." The next day, Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill responded with a statement, accusing the Czech midfielder of a gross violation of professional ethics. O'Neill stated that Berger could no longer remain at Aston Villa and should look for a new club. Patrick, whose contract was already expiring in two months, said in response that he would join one of the Premier League clubs (possibly Portsmouth) or return home to the Czech Republic (which eventually happened).
On January 6, 2010, it was announced that Berger had announced his retirement.
