Elisa Toia: Early Life and Education
Elisa Toia was born on March 17, 1950, in Italy. She pursued a degree in political science at the University of Milan and later attended specialization courses at the Bocconi University.
Political Career in Italy
Regional and Local Government:From 1975 to 1985, Toia served on the municipal council of Vanzago in the province of Milan. She then became a member of the regional council of Lombardy from 1985 to 1995. During this time, she held various roles in the regional government, including coordinating social services, addressing drug addiction and AIDS, and caring for the elderly.
National Government:
Toia entered national politics in 1995 as a member of the Italian People's Party in the Chamber of Deputies. In 1996, she moved to the Senate, representing the same party. She later joined the Democratic Party of the Left and served as a junior state secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
European Parliament Career
Election and Affiliations:In 2004, Toia was elected to the European Parliament for the Daisy party. She joined the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe parliamentary group. In 2009 and 2014, she was re-elected as a member of the Democratic Party of Italy.
LGBTQ+ Stance:
In 2012, Toia co-authored an article expressing opposition to the legal recognition of same-sex marriage in Italy. She argued that denying legal recognition did not constitute discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.
Leadership in the European Parliament:
In 2014, Toia was elected head of the Democratic Party delegation in the European Parliament. She was considered an unexpected successor to David Sassoli in this role.
