Early Life and Education
Gilles Aslan was born into a French-Canadian family. He began his musical education in Canada, studying under renowned teachers such as Auguste Descarries, Ernest Seitz, and Lubka Kolessa.
Debut and Early Career
Aslan made his debut in 1942. His successful solo career included numerous premieres of Canadian piano music during the mid-1940s. In 1948-1949, he accompanied a Parisian ballet company on a Latin American tour, subsequently settling in France.
Teaching and Concert-Lectures
Aslan taught at the Paris Conservatory, mentoring notable students such as Gérard Poulet. From 1954 onward, he primarily gave concert-lectures, discussing musical works and engaging in discussions with other musicians, including Walter Gieseking, Georges Auric, and Marcel Landowski.
Concert Career
Aslan maintained a prolific concert career, performing over 900 concert-lectures and 800 traditional concerts throughout his life. His performances spanned from the Baroque era to contemporary works.
Writings
In addition to his musical career, Aslan published short biographical sketches of composers ranging from Vivaldi to Stravinsky. He authored two editions of the book "Panorama de la musique canadienne" (1962, 1968), a comprehensive overview of Canadian music.
Later Life
Aslan returned to Canada in 1987. His legacy survives through his teachings, performances, and writings, which continue to inspire musicians and music lovers alike.
