Early Life and Exodus Career
Paul Baloff, an American vocalist, rose to prominence as the frontman of the thrash metal band Exodus. He was invited to join Exodus by his friend Kirk Hammett, who later left to join Metallica. Baloff's contributions to Exodus included the band's first demo (1982 Demo) and their seminal debut album, "Bonded by Blood." He also participated in the creation of their second album, "Pleasures of the Flesh," and recorded demos for three songs that eventually appeared on it.
Departure from Exodus and Subsequent Projects
However, in 1986, Baloff was dismissed from Exodus due to "personal and musical differences." He subsequently performed with several other bands, including Hirax and Piranha, and briefly filled in as a vocalist for Heathen in 1989.
Exodus Reunion and Tragic Demise
In 1997, Baloff rejoined Exodus, and the band released a live album, "Another Lesson in Violence." Unfortunately, label issues led to the reunion being short-lived.
In 2001, Baloff reunited with Exodus once more at a benefit concert called Thrash of the Titans. The band performed several shows in San Francisco and the surrounding area. However, in 2002, Baloff suffered a severe stroke. After three days in a deep coma, the remaining members of Exodus (as Baloff was an orphan) made the decision to remove him from life support. They intended to do so at precisely 2 minutes before midnight, a reference to his beloved Iron Maiden song "2 Minutes to Midnight," but he passed away before that.
Legacy and Memorial
On February 4, 2012, Exodus held a memorial concert for Baloff, which also featured guest appearances from musicians who had played with the band before their debut album. Baloff's legacy continues to live on as a respected figure in the thrash metal community.
