Biography of Paul Brandon Gilbert

Paul Brandon Gilbert is an American musician and guitarist known for his solo work as well as performances with bands such as Racer X and Mr. Big. He was born in Illinois, United States, and grew up in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

Early Career

In the late 1981, Gilbert first connected with Mike Varney, the founder of Shrapnel Records, and asked for the opportunity to play with Ozzy Osbourne. Initially, Varney thought it was a crazy idea for Osbourne to play with an unknown 15-year-old guitarist. However, after listening to Gilbert's demo recording, Varney changed his opinion. At the age of 15, Gilbert was featured in Guitar Player magazine.

Guitar Institute of Technology and Racer X

Three years later, Gilbert moved to Los Angeles and enrolled in the Guitar Institute of Technology. He developed his skills and was able to participate in the recording of Racer X's debut album. Racer X was formed in Los Angeles in 1985 and consisted of Gilbert on guitar, Juan Alderete on bass, Harry Gschoesser on drums, and Jeff Martin on vocals. The band was heavily influenced by Judas Priest, and Gilbert's guitar solos were reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen.

Solo Career and Mr. Big

In 1988, Gilbert left Racer X and joined the band Mr. Big shortly after. Mr. Big gained worldwide fame, especially in Japan, with hits like "To Be With You." Gilbert continued to perform with the band until 1997 before pursuing a solo career. Mr. Big reunited in 2009 and continues to perform to this day.

Later Career and Discography

In addition to his work with Racer X and Mr. Big, Gilbert has released numerous solo albums. His second instrumental album, "Silence Followed By A Deafening Roar," was released in June 2008. He currently has 12 solo albums to his name, along with his recordings with Racer X and Mr. Big.

Gilbert currently resides in Los Angeles with his second wife, Emi Gilbert.
