Early Life and Military Career

Education and Cadet Corps

Paul Bronsart von Schellendorff was born into a military family. After receiving his early education in the Cadet Corps, he joined the grenadier regiment in 1849.

Franco-Prussian War

Chief of Staff and Negotiations with Napoleon III

During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, von Schellendorff served as Chief of Staff of the General Staff. After the surrender of Sedan, he was sent to negotiate with Emperor Napoleon III.

Post-War Reforms

Head of the Guards General Staff and Military Minister

Following the war, von Schellendorff became Head of the Guards General Staff. In 1881, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and became War Minister in 1883.

Army Expansion and Improved Equipment

Under his leadership, a plan for the expansion of the army was developed. Despite facing opposition in the Reichstag, von Schellendorff successfully secured its approval in 1887. He also implemented significant improvements, introducing the magazine rifle and pension system.

Retirement and Literary Works

Commander of 1st Army Corps and Published Writings

In 1889, von Schellendorff retired as War Minister and was appointed Commander of the 1st Army Corps. He published several influential works on military strategy and tactics, including "Ein Rückblick auf die Taktischen Rückblicke" and "Der Dienst des Generalstabes im Frieden und im Krieg."

Legacy

Continuation of Military Dynasty

Von Schellendorff's military dynasty continued with his son, Friedrich, who served in the Russo-Japanese War and wrote memoirs about his experiences.
