Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Bülow, Graf von Dennewitz (16 February 1755 - 25 February 1816), was a distinguished Prussian general who rose to the rank of General of Infantry in 1814.

Early Career and the Napoleonic Wars

Bülow entered military service in 1769 and rose through the ranks. He fought in the War of the Fourth Coalition against Napoleon's armies, serving as Brigadier General under General Lestocq. Bülow saw action at Thorn and Danzig and was wounded at Waltersdorf on February 5, 1807.

The War of Liberation

In 1812, Bülow was appointed Governor of East and West Prussia upon the recommendation of General Yorck. With the French retreating from Russia, Bülow raised a substantial force and was made its commander in early 1813. This marked the beginning of his most significant period of service.

Bülow's military exploits included defeating the French at Möckern on April 5, capturing Halle on May 2, and holding off Marshal Oudinot's advance on Berlin at Luckau on June 4. He also played a vital role in the battles of Großbeeren (August 23) and Dennewitz (September 6), for which he received the title "Graf von Dennewitz."

Later Career

Bülow participated in the invasion of France in 1815. Although he did not fight at the Battle of Ligny, his corps was the first from Blücher's army to join the flank attack on Napoleon at Waterloo.

The Legacy of Dietrich Heinrich Bülow

Bülow's brother, Dietrich Heinrich Bülow, was also a military writer. His work, "Geist des neueren Kriegssystems," caused controversy due to its criticisms of Russian General Kutuzov, resulting in his imprisonment and eventual exile to Siberia. The details of his death remain unclear.
