Childhood and Early Life
Born on December 15, 1964, in South West London, Paul Kaye was adopted by the Kaye family, along with his twin sister Lisa. His adoptive parents owned a sportswear shop. Kaye excelled in sprinting during his school days and developed a passion for punk rock and Sid Vicious. He studied art at Harrow College for two years and graduated with a degree in graphic design from Nottingham Trent University.
Early Career
Before entering the film industry, Kaye was known for his graphic design work. He created posters for stage plays, designed theatrical sets, and illustrated magazines. He also worked as a graphic designer for soccer clubs, including Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Derby County, and designed merchandise for sportswear brands.
The Birth of Dennis Pennis
Kaye's breakthrough came in the mid-1990s when he created the infamous character Dennis Pennis for The Sunday Show. The character originated from an incident where Kaye, drunk and abusive, interrupted an interview with his own band, which was recorded and sent to the show's producers. They offered Kaye a slot, but he declined. When The Sunday Show renewed their offer a year later, Kaye jumped at the chance. With the help of mechanic Anthony Hines, he developed the role and script for Dennis Pennis, a flamboyant journalist with thick glasses and carrot-red hair.
Film and Television Success
Following the success of Dennis Pennis, Kaye transitioned to television and film. He played the lead role in the musical comedy "It's All Gone Pete Tong" and received critical acclaim for his performance. He also had memorable appearances in popular series like "Skins," "Midsomer Murders," "Shameless," and "Lilyhammer."
Game of Thrones
In 2013, Kaye joined the cast of "Game of Thrones" as Thoros of Myr, a Red Priest from the city of Myer. His character played a significant role in the show's third, sixth, and seventh seasons, becoming a close friend to Robert Baratheon and repeatedly resurrecting Beric Dondarrion.
Personal Life
In 1989, Kaye married Orly Katz, an Israeli kindergarten teacher he met while living in Israel. They have two sons, Jordan (born 1991) and Geffen (born 2002). The family resides in London.
Recent Work
Kaye continues to work steadily in film and television. His recent projects include the horror movie "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" and supporting roles in series such as "The Windsors," "Good Omens," and "Catherine the Great."
