Early Life and Club CareerPaultje Litijens, born on November 9, 1947, in the Dutch village of Lopik, embarked on his hockey journey at the age of 12. He made his club debut with Uden and later represented Kraaien (Zaandam) and Kampong (Utrecht). Litijens' exceptional skills made him the top scorer in the Dutch championship an impressive seven times in a row.
Olympic and World Cup Success
Litijens represented the Netherlands at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics, helping the team finish fourth in both tournaments. In 1973, he played a pivotal role in the Netherlands' triumph at the World Cup in Amstelveen, securing a gold medal.
Record-Breaking Achievements
At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Litijens showcased his unmatched scoring prowess. As a striker, he played in seven matches and scored an astonishing 11 goals. His tally included hat-tricks against Canada and India, as well as doubles versus Malaysia and Pakistan. Litijens' exceptional performance earned him the distinction of becoming the tournament's top scorer.
International Legacy
Throughout his career, Litijens represented the Netherlands in 177 matches, amassing an incredible 277 goals. This remarkable achievement stands as the highest goal count in international hockey since World War II. Litijens was particularly renowned for his exceptional skill in executing penalty corners.
Post-Playing Career
After retiring from the sport at the age of 35, Litijens transitioned to coaching and became a board member of Kampong. His contributions to hockey continue to be recognized and celebrated, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest Dutch field hockey players of all time.
