Biography of Paul Louis Toussaint Hroult
Paul Louis Toussaint Hroult, a French chemical engineer, was born on April 10, 1863 in Toury-Arcourt. He enrolled at the Mining School in Paris in 1882.
Industrial Aluminum Production Method
In the early months of 1886, Hroult invented a method for industrial aluminum production through the electrolysis of a cryolite-alumina melt. The news of this invention came just three months after American chemist C. Hall had filed a patent application for a similar process.
Electrode Electric Arc Furnace
In 1889, Hroult designed an electrode electric arc furnace for steel production, which was later named after him. This furnace gained popularity first in Europe and then worldwide.
Legacy
Paul Louis Toussaint Hroult passed away near Antibes on May 9, 1914. His contributions to the field of chemical engineering, particularly in the production of aluminum and steel, have left a lasting impact on industrial processes around the world.
