Early Life and Education

Paul Gambaccini was born into an Italian-American family and raised in Massachusetts. He attended Dartmouth College and graduated with a degree in history. Subsequently, he pursued a degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at University College, Oxford.

Break into Broadcasting

After graduating from Oxford, Gambaccini intended to study law at Harvard or Yale. However, he stumbled upon an opportunity to become the British correspondent for Rolling Stone magazine. His interviews, particularly one with Elton John in 1973, paved the way for his entry into radio and television. He later returned to Oxford as a visiting professor, teaching classes on broadcasting in 2009 and a special lecture on sexuality in 2010.

Early Radio Career

Gambaccini honed his radio skills at WDCR-AM, a prominent college radio station at the time. He gained recognition for his insightful comments in Billboard magazine, solidifying his status as a respected radio personality. In 1973, he joined BBC Radio 1 as a music reporter, becoming known as "The Great Gambo."

BBC and Independent Radio

Gambaccini hosted various music charts on BBC Radio 1, introducing the first UK chart in 1975. He also presented the "Billboard US Top 30" on Saturdays until 1986, when he moved to independent radio. He briefly returned to Radio 1 in 1990 before departing again in 1993. In 1992, he co-founded Classic FM.

BBC Radio 3 and Later Career

Gambaccini joined BBC Radio 3 in 1995, hosting a popular morning show. However, he was later dismissed during a period of restructuring. In 1997, he returned to Classic FM. He is believed to be the only person to have ever heard the original version of R. Kelly's hit song "Ignition."

In 2008, Gambaccini hosted the Radio 4 music quiz show "Counterpoint." He also relaunched "Paul Gambaccini's Hall of Heroes" on Classic FM. Currently, he presents "America's Greatest Hits" on BBC Radio 2 every Saturday evening.

Personal Life

Paul Gambaccini is openly gay and married Christopher Sherwood in Oxfordshire in 2012. He resides in Southbank, London.
