Paul Gaustad: A Career in the NHL
Early Life and Minor League HockeyPaul Gaustad was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He began his hockey career playing for the Portland Hawks before joining the Burnaby Bulldogs of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) in 1999. In 2000, Gaustad was drafted in the 7th round by the Buffalo Sabres.
Buffalo Sabres
Gaustad made his NHL debut with the Buffalo Sabres during the 2002-03 season. He initially played in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Rochester Americans, where he tallied 53 points in his first season. In 2005-06, Gaustad earned a spot in the Sabres' lineup as a fourth-line forward alongside Adam Mair and Andrew Peters.
Career Highlights
During the 2007-08 season, Gaustad impressed by scoring 36 points while playing on the third and fourth lines. He helped the Sabres reach the playoffs and was rewarded with a four-year, $9.2 million contract extension. In 2012, Gaustad was traded to the Nashville Predators for a fourth-round draft pick.
Injury and Comeback
In 2007, Gaustad suffered a torn Achilles tendon in a collision with Dany Heatley. The injury was initially believed to end his season, and potentially his career. However, he made a remarkable recovery and returned to the ice in the playoffs.
Later Career and Retirement
