Early Life and Education

Paul Plishka was born on August 28, 1941, in Old Forge, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Paterson, New Jersey. His parents were Ukrainian immigrants, and he attended Montclair State College (now University), where he studied under Armen Boyajian, who also taught American soprano Marisa Galvany and bass Samuel Ramey.

Opera Debut and Career at the Metropolitan Opera

Plishka made his professional debut with the Paterson Lyric Opera in 1961. His official debut at the Metropolitan Opera came in 1967 as the Monk in La Gioconda. He became one of the Met's leading basses for many years, performing in numerous productions including I puritani at the New York City Opera in 1981. His final performance at the Met was as the Sacristan in Tosca on January 28, 2012, after 46 years and 1642 performances.

International Success and Personal Tragedy

Plishka's international career flourished, including performances at the Teatro alla Scala and other renowned opera houses. However, his personal life was marked by tragedy. In 1984, his younger brother, Dr. Peter Plishka, committed suicide. In 1991, his son, Jeffrey Plishka, was accused but later acquitted of murder and rape.

Awards and Recognitions

Plishka received numerous awards for his contributions to American opera, including the Award for Excellence in the Arts from the Governor of Pennsylvania in 1992. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Great American Opera Singers at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

Plishka's extensive discography includes works by Verdi, Puccini, Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, and others. He collaborated with renowned conductors such as Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Leonard Bernstein, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Lorin Maazel.

Legacy and Current Life

Plishka has been married to Sharon Thomas, a former Met stage director. He has three sons: Nicolai, Paul Jr. (deceased), and Jeffrey. His second son, Paul Jr., also passed away. Plishka continues to support the Delta Omicron professional music fraternity.
