Paul Tannery was a French mathematician and historian of philosophy and science. He was born in Mantes on December 20, 1843. Tannery's scientific interests were focused on the history of philosophy and the history of mathematics, particularly ancient Greek and the modern era.
Education and Career
Tannery enrolled in the École Polytechnique in Paris in 1861. After completing his studies, he served in the state tobacco factories in Pantin from 1865, eventually becoming the director of the factories in 1886. In his free time, he dedicated himself to studying the history of science.
Contributions
Tannery's research primarily revolved around the history of philosophy and mathematics, with a particular emphasis on ancient Greek and the modern era. His works in this field, including translations of Greek philosophers' writings, remain highly regarded and are important resources for historians of science. He published scientific works by Greek mathematician Diophantus and the works of Fermat. Tannery also contributed to the publication of the Complete Works of Descartes.
Tannery collaborated with various journals, including "Revue philosophique," "Bulletin des sciences mathématiques," "Revue des Etudes Grecques," and "Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie," where he published numerous articles on various topics. His articles published in "Revue philosophique" later formed the basis of his book "Pour l'histoire de la science hellène" (For the History of Hellenic Science). Among his notable works are "La géométrie grecque" (The Geometry of the Greeks, 1887) and "Recherches sur l'histoire de l'astronomie ancienne" (Research on the History of Ancient Astronomy, 1893).
