Paulo Amaral: A Pioneer of Physical Fitness in Brazilian Football
Paulo Amaral, a renowned Brazilian footballer and coach, holds the distinction of being the first specialized physical fitness coach in both the Brazilian national team and a Brazilian club.
Early Career and Club Play
Amaral's footballing career began with Flamengo, where he primarily played for the club's reserve team. His debut for the main squad came on March 28, 1943, against Vasco da Gama. After another appearance following nearly a year later, he gained more regular playing time in 1945, scoring a goal against Americano. However, his playing time declined again the following year, leading him to join Botafogo in 1946, where he would end his playing career in 1948.
Transition to Coaching and Physical Fitness
While playing for Botafogo, Amaral pursued a degree in physical education. In 1953, Botafogo's head coach Silvio Pirillo appointed him to the coaching staff to oversee player fitness. The importance of his role became evident as Brazil prepared for the 1958 FIFA World Cup. Amaral joined the national team's coaching staff, focusing on maximizing the physical condition of key players like Garrincha.
National Team and International Coaching
After the 1958 World Cup, Amaral remained with the national team for the 1959 South American Championship. In 1960, he briefly returned to Botafogo as head coach before moving to Vasco da Gama. That same year, he accompanied the Brazilian squad to the FIFA World Cup in Chile, where they retained their title.
After the World Cup, Amaral embarked on a tour of Europe with the national team. He decided to stay in Italy, becoming the head coach of Juventus for two seasons, guiding them to second and fifth place finishes.
Coaching Career in Brazil and Beyond
Returning to Brazil in 1964, Amaral led Corinthians and then moved to Italy once more to manage Genoa, who he led to Serie B relegation. After his stint in Italy, he returned to Brazil to coach Atletico Mineiro, but his time there was marked by poor results. He resumed his role as physical fitness coach for Brazil, but following a disappointing 1966 FIFA World Cup, the coaching staff was dismissed.
Subsequent coaching positions included stints with Bahia, Fluminense, where he won his only major trophy (the Roberto Gomes Pedrosa Tournament), and Portimonense. In 1978, his move to Al-Hilal fell through due to a contract misunderstanding.
Legacy and Passing
Paulo Amaral remained an influential figure in football and passed away in Rio de Janeiro on May 1, 2008. His pioneering work as a physical fitness coach played a significant role in the development of Brazilian football and he is widely recognized as a key contributor to the nation's success on the international stage.
