Early Life and Career
Born to a peasant family in Ukraine, Ivan Ermak received his secondary education and embarked on a career as a tractor driver and brigade leader in a collective farm.
Military Service
In 1933, Ermak joined the Soviet Army. After completing command training in 1937, he participated in the Soviet invasion of Western Ukraine in 1939 and the Winter War against Finland in 1939-1940. He became a member of the Communist Party in 1939.
World War II
With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War (World War II), Ermak served in the active army and fought in the Battle of Stalingrad.
Command of Moto Rifle Battalion
As commander of a moto rifle battalion in the 68th Mechanized Brigade, Ermak led his unit in a remarkable campaign from January 13 to February 15, 1945. They advanced over 600 kilometers, capturing major towns such as Marienbug and Chojnice in Poland. His battalion inflicted heavy casualties and captured numerous enemy soldiers.
Heroic Sacrifice
On February 15, 1945, Ermak was killed in action while repelling an enemy counterattack.
Posthumous Honor
For his exceptional bravery and leadership, Ivan Ermak was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on June 29, 1945. His legacy continues to inspire countless generations of Russian military personnel.
