Early Life and Football Career
Sergey Ivanovich Romanov was born on May 21, 1898, in the village of Zolotovo, Moscow Governorate. His passion for football ignited at an early age, and he began playing in 1911 for the team of the Imperial Commercial School in Moscow.
Club Career
Romanov's remarkable footballing journey saw him represent numerous clubs throughout his career. In 1914, he joined the "Rogozhsky Sport Circle," followed by "Novogireevo" from 1915 to 1918. He then played for KFS Moscow in 1919 and 1921, "Seyme" Kursk from 1920 to 1921, and MKS and "Krasnaya Presnya" from 1922 to 1925. From 1926 to 1928, he played for "Pishcheviki," and concluded his club career at KOR Moscow in 1929-1930.
International and National Team
Romanov's outstanding abilities earned him a place in the Moscow and Kursk national teams from 1916 to 1921. He also represented the РСФСР national team from 1923 to 1925 and 1928. As part of the victorious РСФСР team, he played a significant role in their successful tours to Finland, Scandinavia, Germany, and Estonia in 1923, scoring a remarkable 42 goals. He was capped once for the USSR national team in 1925.
Coaching Career
Following his retirement due to a severe shoulder injury, Romanov began his coaching career in 1932 as the coach of the VTsSPS sports department and the VTsSPS national team. He also served as the head coach of FC Dinamo Minsk in 1936. In his later years, he worked as the director of the Krasnaya Presnya stadium and sporting goods store from 1949 to 1961.
Community Involvement
Despite his retirement from professional football, Romanov remained deeply involved in the sport. He actively coached youth teams in Krasnopresnensky district, Moscow, during the 1960s. Under his guidance, the boys' team became the Moscow champions in 1962.
Legacy and Final Years
Sergey Ivanovich Romanov passed away in 1974 and was laid to rest in the 35th section of the Vagankovo Cemetery in Moscow. His contributions to Soviet football earned him the prestigious title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in 1936. As a left-winger and half-forward, he was known for his exceptional dribbling skills, lightning-fast runs, and powerful left-footed shots. Romanov's legacy as a player and coach continues to inspire generations of footballers in Russia.
