Pyotr Stepanovich Kolesnik: A Distinguished Naval Commander

Pyotr Stepanovich Kolesnik was a prominent Soviet naval officer who rose to the rank of Rear Admiral in 1957. Born on August 27, 1915, he played a significant role in World War II.

Wartime Exploits

During the Great Patriotic War, Kolesnik participated in a daring amphibious operation on the Tulok River. As the commander of a division of "MO" boats, he courageously faced enemy fire, suppressing their emplacements with direct artillery fire. His actions provided crucial cover for the landing forces. Despite coming under relentless mortar fire, Kolesnik skillfully employed smoke screens to protect the approaching landing craft. His efforts ensured the successful landing without any losses among the participating vessels.

In addition, Kolesnik distinguished himself during an aerial raid by enemy aircraft. With his boat's limited anti-aircraft capabilities, he nevertheless provided intense fire support to vulnerable transport ships. His courage, initiative, and strategic use of weaponry earned him the Order of Alexander Nevsky.

Family and Career

Kolesnik's younger brother, Igor Stepanovich, bravely served as a motorman in the Black Sea Fleet but unfortunately perished in 1942. Kolesnik was married to Natalia Vladimirovna Kolesnik (née Nornevskaya) and had six children. Notably, his sons Georgy Pavlovich (1943), Vladimir Pavlovich (1947), Alexander Pavlovich (1954), and Andrei Pavlovich (1955) all became officers in the Soviet Navy.

Retirement and Legacy

Kolesnik retired from active service in 1972 and spent his remaining years in Tallinn, Estonia. He passed away in 1977 and was laid to rest in the Alexander Nevsky Cemetery in Tallinn. His legacy lives on as a testament to his unwavering courage, tactical brilliance, and dedication to the Soviet Union's naval defense.
