Biography of Pavel Shkapenko

Pavel Shkapenko was a Ukrainian football player who played as a midfielder. He represented the Ukrainian national team and had a successful career in both domestic and international competitions.

Early Years and Career

From childhood, Shkapenko was involved in various sports such as hockey, swimming, athletics, and gymnastics. However, he found his passion in football and started playing for the local team "Transformator" before joining the youth academy of Zaporizhzhia's "Metallurg." Under the guidance of his first coach, Nikolay Skrylnik, Shkapenko made his debut for the senior team at the age of 17 and helped them earn a spot in the Soviet Top League.

Shkapenko's talent was quickly noticed, and he caught the attention of scouts from Dynamo Kyiv during his first season in the Ukrainian Championship. He joined Dynamo Kyiv in the 1992/93 season and soon became a crucial player in the starting lineup. In his first three seasons, he scored 28 goals, an impressive record for a midfielder. One of the highlights of his career was a match against Barcelona in the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League, where he scored a header goal after Viktor Leonenko's assist.

Later Career

After six seasons at Dynamo Kyiv, Shkapenko faced several injuries that affected his performance. One severe injury required a partial muscle dissection on his thigh, raising concerns about his career. Fortunately, he recovered and requested a loan move to gain more playing time. In 1998, he was loaned to CSKA Kyiv. However, upon his return, Shkapenko realized his time at Dynamo Kyiv was coming to an end.

He agreed to be traded to "Uralan" in exchange for Artem Yashkin and Sergey Kormiltsev, but playing in the capital of Kalmykia proved challenging. The club's management owed Shkapenko a significant amount of money and even forged his signature on documents related to his salary. The Control and Disciplinary Committee (CDC) acknowledged Shkapenko's claims, and he was granted the status of a free agent.

Shkapenko's next club was Moscow's "Torpedo," where he played for two seasons. Initially, things went well for him, but an injury hindered his progress, and he struggled to make it into the starting lineup. Eventually, after a conversation with the coach and club officials, Shkapenko was loaned to Yaroslavl's "Shinnik," who played in the first league. He finished the second half of the season as the team's top scorer. Once his loan term ended, "Torpedo" released Shkapenko, making him a free agent.

He then joined "Tomi" and later moved to Krasnodar's "Kuban" for the next season. However, due to recurring injuries, Shkapenko was forced to retire after playing only 14 games.

Later Life and Family

As of October 2014, Shkapenko was coaching the team "Rubin" in Peskovka, participating in the Kiev Oblast Championship. Sadly, he passed away on April 17, 2023, at the age of 50. He was laid to rest at the Sovskoye Cemetery in Kyiv.

Shkapenko was survived by his wife, Oksana, although their marriage was not officially registered. They had two daughters named Polina and Maria. His wife worked as a real estate agent, and after retiring from football, Shkapenko actively assisted her in the business. From 2015 onwards, his daughters pursued careers in modeling.

International Career

Shkapenko represented the Ukrainian national team in 10 matches. He made his debut on May 18, 1993, in a friendly match against Lithuania. He also participated in the qualification tournaments for the UEFA Euro 1996 and the FIFA World Cup 1998.
