Biography of Pavel Yakovenko

Pavel Yakovenko is a former Soviet and Ukrainian football player, known for his role as a midfielder for Kiev's "Dynamo". He was born on October 23, 1964, in Nikopol, Ukrainian SSR.

Early Life and Football Career

Yakovenko began his football journey as a student of the Nikopol Football School "Kolos" and later the Dnipropetrovsk Football School "Dnepr-75". He further honed his skills at the sports boarding schools in Kharkiv and Kyiv. His first coach was Mikhail Nasedkin.

In 1992, Yakovenko transferred to Sochaux in France, where he played only one official match. Unfortunately, during the following training game against "Strasbourg," he suffered an injury that sidelined him for most of the 1992/93 season. He managed to play only two more matches that season.

The 1993/94 season started well for Yakovenko, as he came on as a substitute in the third round match against "Metz" and scored a goal just three minutes later. However, his time in the starting lineup was short-lived, as he once again suffered an injury that ultimately ended his career.

Achievements and National Team

Yakovenko achieved the title of International Class Master of Sports in 1986 and was honored with the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in the same year. He also became an esteemed coach in Ukraine.

Throughout his career, Yakovenko played for notable clubs such as Metalist Kharkiv (1981-1982), Dynamo Kyiv (1982-1993), and Sochaux, France (1993-1994). He represented the Soviet Union national team, playing 19 matches and scoring one goal.

He made his debut for the national team on May 7, 1986, in a match against Finland, which ended in a 0-0 draw. His final match took place on March 28, 1990, against the Netherlands, where the USSR emerged victorious with a score of 2-1.

Awards and Honors

Yakovenko was a three-time champion of the USSR in 1985, 1986, and 1990. He also won the USSR Cup in 1985, 1987, and 1990. Additionally, he was part of the victorious team that won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1986. In 2004, Yakovenko received the Order "For Merit" of the III degree.
