The Belarusian Brad Pitt: Pavel Yuchakov-Kharlanchuk
Pavel Yuchakov-Kharlanchuk, a Belarusian actor and theatrical director, is often referred to as the "Belarusian Brad Pitt." Unlike his Hollywood counterpart, however, this native of Belarus' second-largest city boasts not only a diverse range of roles and a brood of biological and adopted children but also a reputation for unwavering family values and an active civic stance.
Childhood and Early Life
Born on June 27, 1978, in Gomel, Belarus, Pavel grew up in a family where his engineer father and teacher mother already had an older son. While his brother received more maternal attention and paternal discipline, Pavel remained relatively trouble-free. At the age of 10, he joined an amateur children's theater and would often stay out late rehearsing.
It was during a visit by Minsk-based theatrical director Vladimir Korotkevich to Gomel that Pavel's talent was recognized. Korotkevich first cast him as the male lead in "Scarlet Sails," based on Alexander Green's novel, and subsequently enrolled him in his class at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts. Pavel graduated as an actor in 2000 and obtained a director's degree from the same institution under Boris Lutzenko in 2003.
Theater and Film
Pavel's theater career has been significantly influenced by his political beliefs. From 2003 to 2006, he worked as an actor at the Maxim Gorky National Academic Drama Theater. However, not all of his directorial ventures were met with universal acclaim. "Lie Detector," based on Vasily Sigaryov's play, faced criticism for its use of foul language, while "Gelsomino in the Land of Liars," where Pavel collaborated with fellow actors, was more favorably received.
Pavel's role as Khlestakov in "The Government Inspector" was considered a highlight of his time at the Gorky Theater. His political activism led to a 10-day detention in 2006, followed by his dismissal from the theater six months later. The backlash against him extended to the extent that he was even denied employment at McDonald's.
During this period, Pavel relied on commercial endorsements and appearances in Russian television series. In 2010, he joined the Yanka Kupala National Theater (Kupala Theater), where he starred in the acclaimed production of "The Government Inspector."
On August 10, 2020, Pavel was detained under false accusations of participating in an opposition protest. He maintained that he was merely trying to hail a taxi home. Released from custody early the following morning, Pavel resigned from the Kupala Theater in protest against the dismissal of the troupe's chief director, Pavel Latushko, and the suppression of protests in Belarus.
Pavel's on-screen debut came in 2003 with a small role in the Belarusian-German film "Babi Yar." His first leading role was in the 2007 adaptation of Yanka Kupala's "Zdeshniye," a joint production of Belarusian and Polish filmmakers. In 2013, he worked alongside actress Veronika Plyashkevich in two television series: "Traces of the Apostles" and "She Couldn't Do Otherwise."
In the 2020 short film "The Gift," Pavel appeared alongside his wife. The film, a collaboration between filmmakers from Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States, won awards at international film festivals in Giffoni and Aroka.
Personal Life
Standing at 181 cm (5'11"), Pavel maintains an optimal weight of 78 kg (172 lbs). He takes pride in his athleticism, playing defense for the "Art-Stars" actors' football team and actively participating in the World Football Championship for actors.
Pavel found happiness with actress Anna Yuzhakova, whom he met while directing her graduation performance. Anna's maiden name became the first part of the hyphenated surname that Pavel adopted. Together, they have five children: three biological (Adel, Olivia, and Paulina) and two adopted siblings (Phillip and Ivona).
Pavel credits fatherhood with instilling in him a greater sense of responsibility and inspiring him to work diligently in the film industry. He often shares photos of his family on his Instagram account. In 2013, the family moved into a spacious apartment in the village of Bogatyrevo, located near Minsk. The following year, they represented the Minsk region in the national "Family of the Year" competition.
Present and Future
Pavel Yuchakov-Kharlanchuk continues to add to his filmography with roles in television series produced in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. In 2020, he played Oleg in the Ukrainian detective miniseries "Dvoye nad Propast'yu," the unfaithful fiancé of the protagonist. His current projects include the Russian musical drama "Khor" and the medical drama "Sprosite Medsestru," both of which premiered in 2021.
Pavel Yuchakov-Kharlanchuk is a multifaceted artist whose talent and dedication have made him a respected figure in both the theater and film communities. His personal journey, marked by challenges and triumphs, is an inspiring example of the human spirit and the power of art to connect people and inspire change.
