Pavel Isakovich Vigdergauz: A Renowned Architect
Early Life and Wartime ExperiencesPavel Isakovich Vigdergauz was born on September 7, 1925, in Artemovsk, Ukraine. His father's journalistic career required the family to relocate frequently within Donbas. When World War II erupted, the family was in Makeevka. In October 1941, Pavel and his mother evacuated to Kizel in the Urals. There, he worked at a military factory as a machinist.
In 1943, Pavel joined the Soviet Army and trained in a military infantry school. He then served with the 349th Guards Regiment of the 105th Guards Vienna Airborne Division, fighting in Hungary and Austria. He was wounded in the Battle of Vienna.
Post-War Aspiration and Architectural Training
After demobilization, Pavel witnessed the destruction in Stalino (now Donetsk). Inspired by an architect sketching building ruins, he expressed his desire to pursue architecture. He was hired as a draftsman-assistant at the Oblproekt architectural firm. There, he worked with renowned architects Strashnov and Kuznetsov.
In 1947, they encouraged Pavel to apply to the Kharkov Institute of Architecture and Construction. Despite having forgotten much since school, he was admitted based on his exceptional drawing skills. Six years of study later, he graduated as an architect.
Architectural Career and Achievements
Pavel Vigdergauz's architectural career spanned 53 years. He designed countless buildings, becoming a member of the Union of Architects of the USSR and Ukraine. In 1978, he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR for his work on Donetsk's landscape architecture.
Pavel's notable projects included:

- Design for the memorial "To the Liberators of Donetsk"
