A Lifetime of Peace Advocacy: The Peace Pilgrim
Early Life and Spiritual AwakeningMildred Lizete Norman was born on June 18, 1908, in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, to German immigrant parents. From a young age, she exhibited a love for reading and spirituality. After graduating high school, she immersed herself in spiritual literature and began practicing meditation.

One day, after a meditation session, Norman experienced a profound spiritual awakening. She realized her calling to spread peace and kindness throughout the world. Thus began her 28-year journey as the Peace Pilgrim.
A Journey of Simplicity and Love
On January 1, 1953, Norman embarked on her mission from Pasadena, California. She carried no money, no extra clothing, and no possessions, believing it would enhance her message of overcoming evil with good and hate with love.
Norman slept outdoors or with people she met along the way. She ate at gas stations or accepted invitations for meals. Her focus was on connecting with others and advocating for a peaceful existence.
A Voice for Peace
Within a short time, Norman became a renowned peace activist. She spoke at prestigious universities, churches, and rallies. As a dedicated vegetarian, she promoted a healthy lifestyle and the rejection of violence.
Norman's unwavering conviction and infectious optimism gained her a wide following. Her radio broadcast in California was later published as the book "Steps Toward Inner Peace."
A Legacy of Hope
Norman's journey served as an inspiration to countless individuals. Her image has been immortalized in literature and film. Even in her 60s, she remained a tireless advocate for peace.
