Early Life and Education
Percy Wyndham Lewis was born on the deck of his father's yacht off the coast of Nova Scotia. In 1899, he began studying painting in London. From 1902 to 1909, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, spending a significant amount of time in Paris.
Artistic Affiliations
In 1911, Lewis co-founded and exhibited with the Camden Town Group in London. Two years later, he joined the London Group. Lewis developed his own artistic theory known as "Vorticism," which was influenced by Italian Futurism and French Cubism. He propagated his ideas through the magazine "Blast" (World Fire).
Vorticism
In 1914, Lewis published the "Vorticist Manifesto," which echoed the sentiments of the Italian "Futurist Manifesto." The manifesto declared that only powerful emotional explosions could serve as the source of artistic creation. Vorticists found their spiritual inspiration in American poet Ezra Pound.
Other Artistic Pursuits
In addition to his Vorticist works, Lewis produced naturalistic and surrealist paintings. He also worked as an illustrator for the magazine "The Enemy." Despite his contributions to the art world, Lewis was often met with criticism, notably from Ernest Hemingway, who described him as "the most loathsome human being I have ever encountered."
