Biography of Pete Mckenzie
Pete Mckenzie, a British man who has been walking barefoot for 50 years, lives in Birmingham, England. He is 69 years old, married, and has children and grandchildren. At first glance, he may not seem strange or unusual, but that changes once you look at his feet. In any weather, at any time of the year, Pete Mckenzie walks barefoot. Throughout his life, he has only had to wear shoes a few times, as he mostly lives his life barefoot.
A Life Without Shoes
In one of his interviews, Pete recalled that his wife could see him wearing shoes, but his children hardly ever did, and his grandchildren have never seen him in shoes. He made the decision to go barefoot in the mid-1960s and has not worn shoes or socks for half a century. Pete remembers hating shoes and being constantly scolded by his mother for not wearing them. One day, when he was 16 years old, he was walking home and impulsively took off his shoes and socks, throwing them into a river.
A Hippie Spirit
In his youth, Pete embraced the hippie lifestyle, and old photographs show a long-haired, somewhat scruffy young man with a beard, walking barefoot. Some elements of the hippie persona have stayed with Pete to this day. He became somewhat of a legend in Birmingham's pubs, as a man who never wore shoes, attracting curiosity from others.
A Unique Journey
Over the years, Pete has grown older, but his aversion to shoes remains the same. He has been married to his wife Jennifer for 44 years, and they have three grandchildren. Pete still enjoys spending time in pubs and bars, and he has grown accustomed to people's reactions when they see his bare feet. He has been photographed countless times with visitors who want to capture the image of the barefoot hippie.
Embracing His Bare Feet
In recent years, Pete has even found a way to make money with his bare feet. He sells souvenirs with his own logo featuring a pair of bare soles. After 50 years without shoes, Pete's feet have become accustomed to cold and dirt. He claims that even on the coldest and muddiest days, he doesn't feel cold, and he genuinely believes that "dirty and smelly" shoes are much dirtier than the streets. It is unlikely that Pete, who has managed without shoes for the past five decades, will ever wear them again. He swears that he would rather die than put shoes on his feet. His wife, Jennifer, has shown immense patience and has never stood in the way of her husband's eccentricity, considering his barefoot nature a charming quirk.
A Barefoot Engineer
Before retiring, Pete worked as an engineer in a telephone company, where apparently, there was no strict dress code. Those who have known Pete for a long time have grown accustomed to his barefoot lifestyle, while those who see him for the first time are always curious to meet and talk to this peculiar man, a regular in Birmingham's pubs.
