Biography of Peter "Pete" M. Rouse

Peter "Pete" M. Rouse was born on April 15, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut. His father, Benjamin Irving Rouse, was a renowned anthropologist and archaeologist, and a professor at Yale University. His mother, Mary Uta Mikami, was of Japanese descent and her grandfather served as a samurai and vassal to the shogun. Rouse's parents met at Yale University and conducted archaeological research together.

Rouse graduated from Colby College in Maine in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He then pursued a Master of Arts degree in economics from the London School of Economics in 1970. After returning to the United States, Rouse began his political career as an aide to James Abourezk, a Democratic senator from South Dakota known for his criticism of President Richard Nixon and the Vietnam War.

In 1979, Rouse became the chief of staff for the vice-governor of Alaska, Terry Miller. He later served as the chief of staff for Congressman Dick Durbin and Congressman Berkeley Bedell. Rouse was known for his influential role in the Senate and his strategic planning abilities.

In 2004, Rouse joined the staff of Senator Barack Obama, who had recently been elected to the Senate from Illinois. Rouse played a crucial role in advising and organizing Obama's senatorial office.
