Mesrop Movsesyan: Armenian Public Figure and Journalist
Early Life and CareerMesrop Levonovich Movsesyan was born on January 3, 1950, in Yerevan, Armenian SSR. He pursued a degree in cultural studies at the Institute of Culture in Tashkent from 1972 to 1975 and embarked on a career as a TV director. His early roles included assistant director at the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company of Armenia from 1969 to 1970 and director in the central television department from 1973 to 1991.
Founding A1+ Television Company
In 1991, Movsesyan founded and became the director of the A1+ television company. A1+ quickly gained popularity for its independent reporting and critical coverage of the Armenian government.
Political Activism
Movsesyan's role as a journalist extended beyond the realm of television. He was an outspoken critic of the Armenian government and actively participated in political demonstrations. His involvement in politics brought him into conflict with the authorities, who accused him of incitement and sedition.
Imprisonment and Acquittal
In 2001, Movsesyan was arrested and imprisoned on charges of tax evasion and abuse of power. He spent seven years in jail before being acquitted by the European Court of Human Rights in 2008. His case became a symbol of the suppression of freedom of speech in Armenia.
Later Life and Legacy
After his release from prison, Movsesyan continued to be an advocate for media freedom and political reform in Armenia. He died in 2019 at the age of 69, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a courageous journalist and public figure who fought for justice and transparency in his country.
