Pete Turner was born in 1934 in Albany, New York. From a young age, he had a deep interest in color, being drawn to watercolors, colorful pictures, and even postage stamps that combined colors in unusual ways. A pivotal moment in his childhood was when he visited a neighbor's photo lab and witnessed the magic of photographs appearing under the red light. This experience sparked his passion for photography, and with the support of his parents, he set up his own photo lab in their basement.

Early Career and Influence

While studying at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Turner delved into the study of art history and painting, in addition to photography. He was greatly influenced by the works of surrealists and their incredible combinations of colors. After serving in the military as a photographer, Turner gained valuable experience capturing images of military objects. He was assigned to the elite team of photographers at the military photo lab in New York, where he became the head of the color printing department.
