Early Life and Education

Peter Grigorievich Akulovwas born on July 10, 1907, in Ekinskaya village, Olonets Governorate (now Kargopolsky District, Arkhangelsk Oblast). He was the son of peasants. In 1924, he graduated from an incomplete secondary school in Kargopol. He then studied at the Vologda Soviet Party School, after which he was enlisted in the one-year commander's team in 1926. In 1927, he passed an exam to become a reserve platoon commander. He worked as a social studies teacher at a school in Kargopol.

Career Before World War II

Akulov was elected secretary of the Kargopol District Komsomol (1927-1929) and then head of the Agitprop Department of the Kargopol District Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) (1929-1930). He entered the Red Army in 1930. Before the war, he served as a district military commissar in Kotlas, Podosinovets, and Belgorod.

World War II

Akulov participated in the Great Patriotic War from June 1941 as chief of staff of the 956th Rifle Regiment, 299th Rifle Division. In October 1941, he was appointed commander of the 956th Rifle Regiment. The 299th Rifle Division was disbanded, and in December 1941, he was transferred to the staff of the 50th Army. He was then sent to the Frunze Military Academy for a course for regiment commanders, which he completed in May 1942. In the same month, he was appointed commander of the 520th Rifle Regiment, 167th Rifle Division.

Under Akulov's command, the 520th Rifle Regiment (167th Rifle Division, 38th Army, 1st Ukrainian Front) was among the first to enter Kyiv on November 3-5, 1943, where it participated in fierce fighting in the city's center. For his skillful command of the regiment, exemplary fulfillment of combat missions, and heroism and courage, Akulov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on January 10, 1944. He was presented with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal (No. 2451).

Post-War Career

After the war, Akulov served as commander of a regiment in the 38th Army, Prikarpatsky Military District (June 1945 - October 1947). He then served as a district military commissar in Minsk (November 1947 - October 1950) and as a regional military commissar in the Molodechno Oblast of the Byelorussian SSR (October 1950 - September 1951). After graduating from courses at the General Staff Academy of the USSR Armed Forces in 1952, he was appointed head of the Organizational Mobilization Department of the staff of the Far Eastern Military District. From May 1956 to May 1960, he held a similar position in the Voronezh Military District.

Retirement and Legacy

Colonel Akulov retired from the army in May 1960. He lived in Voronezh, where he passed away on November 20, 1964. He was buried in the Kominternovskoye Cemetery in Voronezh.
