Wolfgang Overath was born in Siegburg, Germany, on May 29, 1943. He began his football career with hometown club SpVgg Siegburg 04 at a young age. His exceptional talent quickly caught the attention of 1. FC Köln, who signed him to their youth academy in 1962.

Overath made his debut for 1. FC Köln's first team in 1963. He quickly established himself as a key player, showcasing his exceptional technical ability and creativity in the midfield.
