Biography of Peter Donaldson

Peter Donaldson was a British economist, scholar, writer, television and radio presenter. He was born in Eccles, Lancashire, but his family moved to Gillingham, Kent when he was only 18 months old. He received a scholarship to study philosophy, politics, and economics at Balliol College, Oxford. In 1957, he began lecturing at the University of Leeds and later moved to the University of Leicester in 1960.

In 1964, Donaldson accepted a position at Osmania University in Hyderabad, India. He lived in India for three years and returned to the UK for only six months during that time. After fulfilling his contract in Hyderabad, he joined Ruskin College in Oxford on a full-time basis. He remained at Ruskin College until his retirement in the early 90s.

Passion for Economics Education

From the early days of his academic career, Peter Donaldson was deeply concerned about the low level of economic education in schools and institutions. While working at the University of Leicester, he began collecting materials for a more comprehensive educational course. These materials eventually formed the basis of his first book, 'Guide to the British Economy,' which was first published in 1965. The book's success led to three subsequent reprints in 1967, 1971, and 1976. Donaldson earned a reputation as a talented popularizer of economics within academic circles.

Television and Radio Career

Soon after the publication of his book, representatives from the BBC contacted Peter Donaldson. With their assistance and initiative, he developed the project 'Managing the Economy,' which was successfully broadcasted on BBC Radio 4 in the late 60s. While still working in India, Donaldson became actively interested in developing economies, leading to the creation of the program 'Affluence and Inequality,' which aired on Radio 4 in the early 70s. Alongside this program, he also released a new book, 'Worlds Apart,' which explored similar themes.

Educational Projects

In the late 70s and early 80s, Peter Donaldson launched a new educational project, which included books, radio, and television programs. His shows were well-received by the general audience, and many school teachers used them as educational resources.
